The Art of Portuguese Ceramics: New Skills and Inspiration for Craft Depo Educators

In October 2024, two educators from Craft Depo travelled to Lisbon, Portugal, to discover the art of traditional Portuguese ceramics and learn new artistic techniques. The training took place within the European Union's Erasmus+ programme, Adult Education sector.

Project number: 2024-1-EE01-KA121-ADU-000216225. Mobility type: Individual staff mobility - Courses and Training.

The training was hosted by A Casa Do Azulejo, a creative studio specialising in Azulejo - the famous Portuguese decorative ceramic tiles that have adorned buildings, streets and interiors throughout Portugal for centuries.

The programme combined an introduction to the history of this art form with intensive hands-on workshops. The educators explored several traditional techniques: Majolica — painting with ceramic colours and glazes; Corda Seca — creating colourful patterns using separating outlines; Aresta — using raised lines to separate colours; and Estampilha — decorating tiles with stencils. Each technique offers unique opportunities for creating original decorative compositions.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the training was discovering how centuries-old craft traditions continue to inspire contemporary art and design. Participants experimented with colours, patterns and painting methods, creating their own ceramic pieces.

However, the experience was not only about learning artistic techniques. An important part of the programme focused on modern approaches to adult education through creativity. The educators explored methods for organising practical workshops for learners with different levels of experience, maintaining motivation and encouraging creative independence.

Learning in an international environment provided opportunities to exchange experiences, discover new teaching approaches and find inspiration for future activities.

The main outcome of the mobility was the acquisition of new knowledge, practical skills and ideas that can be applied at Craft Depo. This experience will help expand creative learning opportunities for adults, develop new ceramic painting workshops and introduce the residents of Narva to the rich traditions of Portuguese art.

The training was financially supported by the European Union's Erasmus+ programme.
