The Art of Ebru: Discovering Traditional Turkish Water Marbling

In October 2024, a group of adult learners from Craft Depo visited Antalya, Türkiye, to discover the traditional art of Ebru — a fascinating technique of painting on water.

The learning mobility took place within the European Union's Erasmus+ programme, Adult Education sector.

Project number: 2024-1-EE01-KA121-ADU-000216225

Mobility type: Group Mobility of Adult Learners.

The training was organised in cooperation with Meraki Dil ve Sanat Derneği.

Ebru is an art form in which the final result can never be completely predicted. Drops of paint spread across the surface of specially prepared water, forming unusual patterns. Using delicate tools, the colours are transformed into flowers, ornaments and abstract compositions before being transferred onto paper or fabric.

During the workshops, participants learned traditional Ebru techniques, practised controlling the movement of colours, combining different shades and creating their own compositions. Simple exercises gradually developed into more complex designs, while initial hesitation gave way to confident experimentation.

Learning extended beyond the workshop. Meeting local artists and discovering Turkish cultural traditions enriched the practical experience. Living and learning in another country also brought valuable everyday skills: participants learned to use digital maps, public transport applications and online translators, navigate unfamiliar surroundings and overcome language barriers.

For many participants, the journey was an opportunity to try something they had never dared to do before. Some gained confidence in travelling independently, others became interested in learning English, while others discovered a new form of creative expression.

Learning Ebru, making new connections and developing greater independence were among the most valuable outcomes of this mobility. The experience continues to inspire participants to explore their creativity and pursue further learning.

The mobility was financially supported by the European Union's Erasmus+ programme.
