From Delicate Filigree to Colourful Mosaic Lamps: Craft Depo Educators Discover Turkish Crafts.

In September 2023,  educators from Craft Depo travelled to Istanbul, Türkiye, to explore traditional Turkish crafts and learn new artistic techniques.

The training courses took place within the European Union's Erasmus+ programme, Adult Education sector.

Project number: 2023-1-EE01-KA121-ADU-000140168

Mobility type: Individual staff mobility – Courses and Training.

We chose two fascinating areas of training – traditional Turkish filigree and mosaic lamp making.

We chose two fascinating areas of training - traditional Turkish filigree and mosaic lamp making.

Two of our educators attended the course “Traditional Turkish Products in Filigree Technology” at Karlik Turistik.

In the hands of skilled artisans, fine metal wires are transformed into intricate openwork patterns, elegant jewellery, candle holders and decorative lamps. During the practical sessions, our educators learned metalworking techniques, traditional ornament design and the creation of decorative objects.

Meanwhile, another educator attended the course “History and Technology of Creating Turkish Mosaic Lamps” at Highlights in Istanbul.

Colourful glass pieces, oriental patterns and the interplay of light and colour make every mosaic lamp unique. During the training, our educator explored the entire creative process, from selecting patterns and colour combinations to assembling a finished lamp.

One of the most valuable aspects of the experience was learning directly from Turkish artisans, who shared their techniques, professional knowledge and approaches to passing these skills on to others.

Most importantly, we are bringing these new skills back to Craft Depo!

As a result of the training, we are launching a new activity - Turkish mosaic lamp-making workshops. Residents of Narva will now have the opportunity to discover this beautiful craft and create their own traditional-style mosaic lamps.

The knowledge gained from the filigree course will also help us enrich our existing creative education programmes with new techniques and ideas. Photo gallery here
